U19 Triathlon

The 9th edition of the Flying Start Triathlon took place in Kuwait on Friday 28th October 2016. Running alongside this event was the annual British Schools of the Middle-East (BSME) U19 Triathlon competition where schools within the Middle-East region are invited to take part in the triathlon.

A variety of schools entered teams of 3 athletes into 3 separate competition with the results culminating in an overall schools winner. The 3 categories for the competition were a boys team, a girls team and a mixed gender team. Each team needed to complete the sprint triathlon distance which involved a 750 metre swim followed by a 20 kilometre cycle ride culminating with a 5 kilometre run. Each pupil would do a separate leg of the event with their cumulative time added together to give them their final overall time and placing.

The Kuwait English School was able to enter a team within each discipline under the supervision of triathlon coach and Director of Sport Mr Craig Broome. The pupils had been training relentlessly for the prior 5 weeks before the event every weekend. They were practicing their cycling, running and swimming in open water with coach Broome aided by the rest of the Kuwait English School Physical Education Department staff.

The training certainly paid dividend as the girls team from Kuwait English School and the mixed gender team were crowned champions in their respective competitions. The boys team from Kuwait English School were able to take the bronze medal in their category. With being crowned champions in two categories and finishing third in the other this was enough for the Kuwait English School triathlon team to be crowned overall winners of the BSME championships.

Mr Broome commented that he “could not have been more prouder of the teams from Kuwait English School, they have worked relentlessly for many weeks committing many hours of their own time and all their hard work has paid off with them being crowned the British Schools of the Middle-East champions 2016”.

A special mention must also go to three pupils from Kuwait English School who completed all three disciplines of the race individually; Youssef Hassan, Omar Al Khayyat and Patrick Barras-Hargan.

Well done to all for an outstanding achievement!
